Same place. — And the soul of the wounded cried out, and God suffers it not to go unavenged. 69. God will not leave the crimes of heretics unavenged. — For the soul of the just is wounded when the faith of the weak is troubled, for whom this very thing — to cry out — is to waste away over another's fall. But God suffers it not to go unavenged, because although by just order he permits something unjust to be done, yet he does not allow to go unavenged the injustice which he justly permitted to be done; for both through the injustice of the reprobate he strikes certain faults of the elect which he considers to be within them, and yet eternal justice does not neglect to smite the injustice of those who smite.
