Ibid. — 'An image before my eyes.' 64. Whatever we perceive of the Father, we see through the Son. — For the Image of the Father is the Son, as Moses intimates concerning man when created, saying: 'God created man; after the image of God He made him' (Gen. i, 27). And as a certain wise man says of the same Son, by way of expressing Wisdom: 'For He is the brightness of the eternal light' (Wisd. vii, 26). And as Paul says: 'Who, being the splendor of glory and the figure of His substance' (Heb. i, 3). When, therefore, His eternity is discerned, so far as the capacity of our infirmity admits, His image is set before the eyes of our mind; because when we truly gaze upon the Father, we see Him, in the measure we receive, through His Image, that is, through the Son;
and through that likeness which was born of Him without beginning, we endeavor in some manner to discern Him who neither began nor ceases. Whence this same Truth also says in the Gospel: 'No one comes to the Father but by me' (John xiv, 6). And well is it subjoined:
