Ibid.: 'And your necks shall be reduced to mire.' 43. As sight is signified by the eye, so pride by the neck. The neck, then, is reduced to mire when every proud man is humbled in death, and the neck once lifted up rots in corruption. For let us behold what manner of corpses of the rich lie in the tombs — what image of death there is in the extinguished flesh, what rottenness of corruption. And surely these were the very men who were exalted with honours, who swelled with the possessions they held, who despised others, and rejoiced as though they alone existed; and while they did not weigh whither they were tending, they knew not what they were. But the neck is reduced to mire, because they lie despised in rottenness who once swelled in vanity.
