32. He broke the clods—that is, the hardness of minds. For the Lord had already entered the minds of certain ones who truly believed Him to be the Redeemer of the human race. Yet since these by no means withdrew from their former observance, since they kept the harsh commandments of the letter, that excellent preacher says to them: If you be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing (Gal. 5:2). He, then, who by reproving crushed the hardness of the Law in the humble mind of the faithful, what else did he do but break the clods in the valley behind the Lord?—lest, namely, the grains of seed which the furrow of the heart, opened by the plough of faith, had received, should perish, pressed down through the observance of the letter. Whereof it is rightly further added:
