Verse 29.— Answer, I beseech you, without contention. 4. Heretics seek quarrels, not reasons. For heretics do not by their inquiries endeavour to attain the truth, but to appear victors. And while outwardly they long to be shown as wise, inwardly through the folly of their elation they are bound by chains. Whence it comes about that they seek out the contests of contentions, and know not how to speak peaceably of God, who is our peace, and out of the business of peace become inventors of quarrels. To whom it is well said by Paul: But if any man seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the Church of God (1 Cor. 11:16). Rightly, moreover, is it subjoined:
