Verse 8.— Let them curse it who curse the day. 41. He punishes his past faults who detects the snares of the seducer in the very suggestion.— As if He plainly said: Let those truly by repenting strike the darkness of this night, who now, despising, trample on the light of the world's prosperity. For if by the day we understand the gladness of delight, it is rightly said of this night: 'Let them curse it who curse the day'; because, namely, those truly correct their past evils through the animadversion of penance, who are now carried off by no delight to deceiving goods. For those whom other noxious things still delight, it is false that they are seen to bewail their other committed deeds.
But if, as was said above, we understand by 'day' the crafty suggestion of the ancient enemy, those are to be understood to curse the night who curse the day; because, namely, those truly punish their past faults who detect the snares of the malignant seducer in the very flattering suggestion.
