Ver. 21.—'My friends are full of words; my eye droppeth unto God.' 29. Testimony is not to be sought from men.—For what is designated by the eye but the intention of the heart? as it is written: 'If thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light' (Matt. vi, 22). Because when anything is done with a good intention, the action of that intention is in no way darkened before God. When therefore friends are full of words—that is, when even those who are joined in faith disparage us—it is necessary that the eye drop unto God, so that our whole intention may flow down into the compunction of inward love, and so much the more subtly raise itself toward inward things, the more it is compelled, being repelled by outward reproaches, to return within, lest it vanish outwardly.
