Every arrogant person either by penance knows his fault, or by perishing perceives his punishment. As if he says: as I. But fittingly, according to the order of vengeance, the fault of the proud is set before the arrogant, because indeed not pride is generated from arrogance, but arrogance from pride. Now in two ways is each sinner regarded by the Lord, when either he is converted from sin, or is punished for sin. For of the regard of conversion it is said: 'Because the Lord looked upon Peter, and Peter, remembering the word of Jesus, wept bitterly' (Luke 22:61). Of the regard of retribution it is again said: 'But the countenance of the Lord is upon them that do evil things, to destroy their memory from the earth' (Ps. 33:17).
