1. All, even the elect, are subject to temptations. Elihu, intimating the force of the supernal dispensation, spoke of the smiting of each one of the elect, saying: 'His soul shall draw near to corruption, and his life to those that bring death.' And while he shows one tempted man, he displays in what temptation the whole human race is set; and while he narrates what is specially done in individuals, he clearly intimates what is generally done in all. For thus he expressed the temptation of certain persons, that is, of individuals in particular, so that it can be understood also universally of all. For the whole race of the elect is in this life afflicted with the weariness of this labour. Whence also presently he there subjoined to the general pestilence a general remedy of medicine, saying:
