Chapter 5, verse 1. Call now, if there be any that will answer thee. 76. What it is to call upon God, and what it is for God to answer. Almighty God often forsakes in his disturbance the prayer of him who scorns His precepts in tranquility. Whence it is written: He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, his prayer shall be an abomination (Prov. 28:9). Now our calling is to entreat God with humble prayer; but God's answering is to grant effect to our prayers. He says therefore: Call, if there be any that will answer thee. As if he plainly said: However afflicted you may cry out, you have no God who answers, because the voice does not find in tribulation Him whom the mind despised in tranquility. Where, still deriding, he subjoins:
