IBID. — 'To whatsoever He shall command them upon the face of the world of the earth.' 57. And moderating their inward movements. — For often, when they are led by the will of Him that governeth, they desire to act otherwise, but are otherwise disposed. For very often they are eager to correct certain of their hearers gently, and yet their speech is drawn into harshness. Very often they desire to prune certain persons harshly, and yet their vigor is reined in by the spirit of gentleness. As, therefore, they cannot go where they will, so also they cannot act as they will. For because the inward Arbiter holds them when He sends them, so also He modifies and receives them when He leads them on, so that sometimes they arrange one thing in thought, but carry out another in deed;
sometimes they begin one way, but conclude another way. Because, therefore, they serve according to that which is commanded them, let it rightly be said: 'Whithersoever the will of Him that governeth them shall lead them, to whatsoever He shall command them upon the face of the world of the earth.' For they find the way of preaching the more open, in proportion as they are led to it not by their own biddings, but by those of their Instructor. Whence it is still added:
