Verse 23.—Would that his belly may be filled, that God may send upon him the wrath of His fury, and rain down His war upon him! 29. Upon the covetous rich man God's darts rain down.—Upon this hypocrite the Lord rains down His war when with the swords of His judgments He smites his works. For to rain down war upon God's part is to press down the life of the wicked from above unto destruction by rigorous sentences.
To rain down war on God's part is to smite hearts that swell in pride against Him, and to strike the arid mind, as with certain thickening drops of rain, with the darts of His judgments; so that, when already he is snatched to judgment, at one moment he may remember that he wickedly coveted, and worse still strove to heap up the things coveted, at another moment may grieve that he forsakes the things heaped up, and at length may feel the fire of retribution which, that he might not live well, he scorned to foresee.
