Verse 7: Whence do you come? 40. God uncovered the snares of the devil by the light of the incarnate Wisdom. — 'On the day' Satan is questioned about his ways, because in the light of manifested Wisdom the snares of the hidden enemy are uncovered. Since therefore the devil is rebuked at the Lord's incarnation, and is checked from his pestilent unbridledness, it is rightly added: To whom the Lord said: Whence do you come? For then He convicted him by questioning Satan's ways, when through the coming of the Mediator, restraining the wickednesses of his persuasion, He rebuked him. And not without cause are the sons of God reported to have stood before the Lord on this day; because, namely, at the calling to the eternal fatherland, all the elect, the light of Wisdom illumining them, were gathered together.

Although the incarnate Wisdom had come to gather them by the effect of His work, they nevertheless already stood inwardly present to His divinity through His foreknowledge. But since the ancient enemy is examined concerning his ways at the coming of the Redeemer, let us hear what he says.
