The devil went about the earth, because he encompassed and possessed all men. — For from Adam, before the Lord's coming, he drew after himself all the nations of the peoples. He went about the earth and walked through it, because through the hearts of the nations he impressed the footprints of his iniquity. For falling from the heights, he possessed human minds by right, because he bound them willingly in the chain of his own fault; and he roamed the more widely in the world, the more that no one was found wholly free from his guilt. To have gone about the world as though by right was, for him, to have found no man who fully resisted him.
But now let Satan return, that is, let the divine power constrain him from the effect of his malice, because now He has appeared in the flesh who had nothing infirm from the flesh in the contagion of sin. There came a lowly one, whom even the proud enemy might marvel at; so that he who had despised the strong things of His divinity might also dread the weak things of His humanity. Whence also at once, by a wondrous signification, that very weakness of humanity is set before him as a thing to be astonished at, so that it may be said:
