(Verse 54) — How then do you comfort me in vain, when your answer has been shown to be contrary to the truth? 73. How hateful is a lie to the saints. — The friends of blessed Job could not comfort him, in whom by their words they were contradicting the truth. And when they called him a hypocrite or an impious man, by the very fact that they, lying, committed a fault, they undoubtedly increased the pain of the righteous man afflicted with wounds. For the minds of the saints, because they love the truth, are tormented even by the guilt of another's falsehood. For the more grievous they perceive the crime of a lie to be, the more they hate it not only in themselves but also in others.
