Verse 4. — They have overthrown the way of the poor, and have alike oppressed the meek of the earth. 59. By the name of the poor, the humble are to be understood. — For by the name of poverty, humility is often wont to be designated. And sometimes those who seem meek and humble, if they know not how to keep discretion, fall by the examples of others. But there are certain heretics who flee association with the crowds, but seek the retreat of a more secret life; who very often infect those whom they find all the more with the plague of their persuasion, in proportion as they seem the more reverend, as it were on account of the merits of their life.
