VERSE 28. — For He has delivered his soul, that it should not go into destruction. The grace of Him who goes before is in concord with the free will that follows. Because, the divine grace going before in the good work, our free will follows, we are said to deliver ourselves, we who consent to the Lord who delivers us. Whence Paul, when he said: 「I have labored more abundantly than they all」 (1 Cor. 15:10), lest he should seem to have attributed his labors to himself, straightway added: 「Yet not I, but the grace of God with me.」 For because he had followed the prevenient grace of God in himself through free will, he fittingly subjoins, 「with me」: so that he should neither be ungrateful to the divine gift, nor yet remain a stranger to the merit of free will.
But concerning this man who, by recognizing, consented to his Deliverer, it is rightly said: 「He has delivered his soul, that it should not go into destruction.」 There follows: IBID. — But living, he should see the light. The light, namely, of truth, which, dead in heart, he could not see. Or certainly, because the Lord said: 「I am the light of the world」 (John 8:12), even the dead shall see the light, when all the unjust shall behold Him coming to judgment in the form of humanity. But then he sees the light while living, who with the free eyes of the heart beholds Him in the form of divinity. There follows:
