He ceases not to groan here who knows himself to be an exile.—He who loves his pilgrimage for the sake of the homeland knows not how to be without grief even amid griefs. Now the words of the just man are full of sorrow, because, so long as he endures present things, he sighs by his speech for another thing; he beholds all that he endured by sinning; and, that he may return to the state of blessedness, he anxiously weighs the judgments by which he is afflicted.
