(VERSE 23) 'We cannot find Him worthily.' (74) Concerning God, who is great in strength, in judgment, and in justice, we cannot worthily find Him. — And even if we could now find Him, yet not worthily, because whatever we perceive in Him is from faith, and not from sight. Yet this, which he considers he has now found, he adds, saying: (IBID.) 'Great in strength and in judgment and in justice, and He cannot be told forth.' Great indeed is He in strength, because He overcomes the strong adversary, and, taking away from his house the vessels of dishonor, changes them into vessels of mercy. Great in judgment, because although here He presses down His elect through adversities, He at some time exalts them into the glory of eternal prosperity.
Great in justice, because although here He long endures, yet at some time He condemns the reprobate without limit. And it is well added: 'And He cannot be told forth.' For He who cannot worthily be perceived, how much less can He be spoken? But we better speak of Him in some measure, if, marveling under the awe of His consideration, we keep silent. There follows:
