Same place. — And that you would hide me until your fury pass away. 14. The fury of God, free from all perturbation, is brought to completion at the end of the world. — The fury also of Almighty God daily exercises the force of his severity in this, that he plunges those who live unworthily into the punishments they deserve. This fury indeed passes now, but at the end it passes away utterly, because it is at work now, but is completed at the world's end. Yet this same fury, as regards the souls of the elect, passed away at the coming of our Redeemer, because the Mediator of God and men, when he himself piously descended thither, brought them back from the barriers of the lower world to the joys of paradise. Amid these things, however, it must be known that the name of 'fury' is not fitting to the Divinity, because no perturbation confounds the simple nature of God.
Hence it is said to him: But you, Lord of power, judge with tranquillity, and with great reverence dispose of us (Wisdom xii, 18). But because the souls of the righteous were at some time to be freed, through the coming of the Mediator, from the places of hell — though not from places of punishment — this too the righteous man foresees, and, in asking, he adds:
