In the last persecution the wrath of the reprobate will boil over against the saints. What is signified by the sea but the life of worldly men, and what by the deep but their high and hidden thoughts? This deep sea that Leviathan makes to boil like a pot, since it is evident that at the time of the final persecution he strives to kindle the souls of the reprobate to the flame of cruelty against the life of the elect. Then the deep sea boils like a pot, when he sets the hearts of those who love the world ablaze with mighty burning, and the things that in this time of peace lay hidden shut up within their malice, then boil over into the seething of a most savage persecution, and through the headlong licence of open cruelty they breathe out the hatreds of ancient rancour which they had long suppressed.
But because, persuaded by a pestilent error, they thus serve Antichrist in these men in such a way that they then more truly reckon themselves to be rendering obedience to Christ, after He had said, 'He will make the deep sea to boil like a pot,' He fitly added:
