Ibid. — And many shall entreat your face. 40. The upright do not covet to be seen as intercessors for others. — For righteous men do not keep themselves within the narrow paths of innocence for this end, that they may be entreated by others. But whether heretics, or the perverse of any kind, by the fact that they live as it were innocently among men, wish to be seen as intercessors for men; and when they insinuate holy things by their speech, they promise to others as something great what they themselves covet; and while they preach heavenly things, they suddenly show in their own pledges what they love. But lest, by long promising earthly things, they lay open what they are, they more quickly recur to words of rectitude. Whence at once it is added.
