Verse 20. — 'His eyes shall see his own slaughter, and he shall drink of the fury of the Almighty.' After the fall the eyes are opened uselessly. — For if, while placed in this life, he had been willing to see his own guilt, he would not afterward drink of the fury of the Almighty. But he who here turns his eyes away from regarding his crime, there is not able to escape the sentence of damnation. Yet often those who do not dread eternal torments are nonetheless terrified into avoiding evil deeds, at least by temporal chastisement. But there are some who have so hardened in iniquity that they do not even fear to be struck in the very things they love, provided they may accomplish what they have perversely purposed. Whence in this place it is added concerning the hardening of the wicked man:
