6. The more anyone sees, the more he should displease himself. — For the less anyone sees himself, the less he displeases himself; and the more he perceives the light of a greater grace, the more he recognizes himself to be worthy of reproof. For when he is inwardly lifted up through all that he is, he strives to conform to that rule which he beholds above himself. And because human infirmity still hinders him, he perceives that he differs from it in no small part; and everything in himself is burdensome to him which is not agreeable to the inward rule. Blessed Job, profiting more after the scourges, takes up this rule the more, and dissents from himself in a great reproof of himself, saying: Therefore I reprehend myself (Job 42:6).
