Chapter 14, Verse 5.—The days of man are short, the number of his months is with Thee. 1. That which passes by with such swiftness is as though it were not. For this he considers, in our regard, as though it were not, which passes by with such great swiftness. But because with Almighty God even things that pass away stand fast, he declares that with Him is the number of our months. Or certainly by 'days' is designated the brevity of time, but by 'months' as it were the multiplied spans of days. To us therefore the days are short. But because our life is afterward extended, the number of our months is said to be with God. Whence also it is said by Solomon: Length of days is in her right hand. It follows:
