Job is afflicted inwardly and outwardly.—Often for the just the exercise of virtue is to tolerate outward adversities alone. But that the contest of a full trial may instruct their strength, sometimes both torments tear them from without, and temptations chastise them from within. Whence the holy man asserts himself to be filled with bitternesses, because while he tolerates scourges outwardly, that is heavier which he bears within concerning the temptation of the adversary in his inmost parts. But amid these things the considered equity of the mighty striker mitigates the force of the pain. Whence he subjoins:
