Verse 3: 'You reprove with words one who is not your equal, and you speak what is not profitable for you.' 29. When heretics find no true faults to cast in another's teeth, they invent false ones. — They reckon that no one has the fear of the Lord except him whom they have been able to drag into the folly of their own profession. Whence he adds: Verse 4: 'As far as in you lies, you have made void fear, and you have taken away prayers before God.' 'You have taken away' means 'you have removed,' as if he plainly said: 'Presuming upon your own righteousness, you disdain to entreat the grace of your Creator.' For when heretics find no true evils in the good, they invent things to reproach them with, that they themselves may seem righteous; and it often comes to pass that they proceed even to open words of insult.
