Ibid. — And thou shalt not fear calamity when it comes. 46. Fighting against a manifold adversary, we ought to prepare ourselves in manifold ways. — For holy men, because they consider that they fight against a manifold adversary, prepare themselves for the contest in manifold ways. For they have against the famine of the divine word its food, against the sword of war the shield of continence, against the scourge of the tongue the protection of patience, against the loss of outward calamity the aid of inward love. Whence in a wondrous way it comes about, that the more numerously the crafty enemy tempts them, the more the circumspect soldiers of God become richer in virtues.
And because each of the elect, while they bravely endure the contests of the present life, prepare for themselves security amid the terror of the judgment to come, rightly it is subjoined:
