Verse 9. — 'The eye that had seen him shall see him no more, neither shall his place any longer behold him. The tongues of those who flatter him shall profit him nothing in judgment.' — What is the place of the hypocrite, but the heart of those who flatter him? For there he rests, where he finds favours. 'The eye therefore that had seen him shall see him no more,' because, taken away by death, he is hidden from his foolish admirers, who were accustomed to gaze upon him with wonder. 'Nor shall his place any longer behold him,' because the tongues of those who flatter him do not follow him to judgment with their favours. Yet nevertheless, as long as he lives, he does not cease to teach even his followers the things which he himself does, and through the depravity of his own error he begets others also into that same dissimulation which he displays.
