Ver. 4. — 'And his sons went and made feasts through their houses.' 27. By the sons of Job celebrating feasts, the preachers are to be understood. — The sons, about to make feasts, went through the houses, when the apostolic preachers, in the diverse regions of the world, ministered the banquets of virtues, as it were to those eating, to those who heard. Whence also to these same sons it is said concerning the hungering peoples: 'Give ye them to eat' (Matt. xiv, 17; xv, 32; Mark vi, 37; Luke ix, 13). And again: 'I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint by the way.' That is, in your preaching let them receive the word of consolation, lest, remaining fasting from the fodder of truth, they sink down in the toil of this life. Hence again to these same sons it is said:
'Labour not for the food which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto everlasting life' (John vi, 27). How these feasts were to be furnished is added, when immediately it is subjoined:
