Verse 7. So Satan went forth from the face of the Lord, and struck Job with a most grievous ulcer, from the sole of the foot even to the crown of the head. Christ, from the beginning of the world, was struck in His own. No one of the elect comes into this life who has not sustained the adversities of this enemy. But the members of our Redeemer were also those who, even from the very beginning of the world, while they live devoutly, suffered cruel things. Was not Abel professed to be a member of His, who signified His death—concerning whom it is written, 'Like a lamb before the shearer he shall be dumb, and shall not open his mouth' (Isa. 53:7)—not only pleasing in his sacrifice, but also dying by keeping silence? From the very beginning of the world, therefore, he strove to assail the body of our Redeemer.
He therefore inflicted a wound from the sole of the foot even to the crown of the head, because, beginning with mere men, he pressed on by his raging even to the very Head of the Church. And it is well said:
