26. God hardens the heart, not because He confers hardness, but because, sins requiring it, He does not soften it. — Although it is one thing to deprive, another not to give, yet He repeated this by subjoining, 'He hath not given' (Job 39:17), what He had premised, 'He hath deprived.' As if He said: 'What I said, He hath deprived, He took away wisdom not unjustly, but justly did not give it.' Whence also the Lord is described to have hardened the heart of Pharaoh, not that He Himself conferred hardness, but that, his merits requiring it, He softened it with no sensibility of fear infused from above (Exod. 7:3). But now the hypocrite, because he feigns himself holy, because he conceals himself under the image of a good work, is covered by the peace of holy Church, and therefore before our eyes he is clothed with the appearance of religion.
But if any temptation of faith break forth, immediately the rabid mind of the wolf strips itself of the guise of the sheep's skin; and how much it rages against the good, it shows by persecuting. Whence it is rightly subjoined:
