Verses 13, 14. — 'He has put my brethren far from me, and my acquaintances have withdrawn from me as strangers. My kinsmen have forsaken me, and they who knew me have forgotten me.' The allegorical sense. — 47. The Jews, Christ's brethren, acquaintances, and kinsmen, who had foretold Him to be incarnate, denied Him when incarnate. — This we show better if we bring forward to the middle the testimony of John, who says: 'He came unto His own, and His own received Him not' (John 1:11). For from Him were made far His brethren, and His acquaintances withdrew — He whom the Hebrews, holding the law, knew to prophesy, and yet, when present, did not at all recognize. Whence it is rightly said: 'My kinsmen have forsaken me, and they who knew me have forgotten me.'
For the Jews were kinsmen through the flesh, acquaintances through the instruction of the law; and, as it were, they forgot Him whom they had prophesied, while they both sang of Him as to be incarnate by the words of the law, and denied Him incarnate by the words of perfidy. There follows:
