V ers. 12. — Vir vanus in superbiam erigitur. 22. Vanitas audacem ex culpa reddit, et in naturae motibus effrenum. — Vanitatis quippe finis est, ut cum peccato mentem sauciat, hanc ex culpa auda- cem reddat; quatenus, sui reatus oblita, quae ami- sisse se innocentiam non dolet, justo excaecata judi- cio, simul et humilitatem perdat. Et fit plerumque ut, pravis desideriis serviens, a jugo se c divini timo- ris excutiat, et, quasi in malorum perpetrationem jam libera, omne quod voluptas suggerit implere con- tendat. Unde cum vir vanus se erigere in superbiam dicitur, illico subinfertur:
Ver. 12. A vain man is lifted up into pride. 22. Vanity makes a man bold in his guilt, and unbridled in the motions of nature. For the end of vanity is that, when it wounds the mind with sin, it should render it bold in its guilt; so that, forgetful of its own guilt, and not grieving that it has lost innocence, blinded by a just judgment, it should at the same time lose humility too. And it often comes to pass that, serving depraved desires, it shakes off from itself the yoke of divine fear, and, as though now free for the perpetration of evils, strives to fulfill everything that pleasure suggests. Hence, when the vain man is said to lift himself into pride, at once it is subjoined:
第十二節:虛妄的人被高舉入於驕傲。第二十二節:虛妄使人在罪過中膽大,在本性之動中放縱不羈。因為虛妄的終局是:當它以罪惡刺傷心靈時,便使心靈在其罪過中膽大妄為;以致心靈忘卻自己的罪責,也不為喪失無辜而憂傷,被公義的審判所蒙蔽,同時也喪失謙卑。而且常有這樣的事:心靈事奉邪惡的私慾,從自身甩脫天主敬畏之軛,彷彿如今在作惡上得了自由,竭力去成就逸樂所暗示的一切。因此,當說虛妄的人把自己高舉入於驕傲時,立刻補充說:
