Verse 14: 'What is man, that he should be spotless?' 37. Man, sprung from the earth and from woman — who can he be without stain? — For by this very fact that he is called 'man,' he is expressed as earthly and infirm: for man (homo) is named from the earth (humus). And how can he be without stain, who of his own accord fell to infirmity, being made of earth? Where also is added — same verse — 'And that he should appear righteous, being born of woman.'
