Verse 2. — And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 5. The multitude of children did not entice him to avarice. Often the fruitfulness of offspring allures the parent's heart to avarice. For he is kindled to the eager gathering of an inheritance in proportion as he is made fruitful with many heirs. Therefore, that it may be shown how holy blessed Job's mind was, he is both called just, and reported to have been the father of much offspring. He who is asserted at the beginning of his book to have been devout in offering sacrifices, is also afterwards remembered by himself as ready in acts of bounty. Let us weigh, then, with how great fortitude he was endowed, whom not even the affection for so many heirs inclined toward tenacity of inheritance. There follows:
