Let confession be made in bitterness of soul. — He who speaks while loathing his own faults must of necessity speak these things in the bitterness of his soul, so that this very bitterness may punish whatever the tongue accuses through the mind's judgment. But it must be known that from the penalty of penance which the mind inflicts upon itself, it in some measure receives assurance, and rises up more confident at the interrogation of the heavenly Judge, so that it may find itself more subtly, and may recognize how each thing is disposed concerning itself. Whence it is straightway added:
