Chapter xix, Verse 2. 'How long will you afflict my soul, and wear me down with words?' 29. What the just suffer from the wicked. — The utterances of the holy man, as we have often already said, are sometimes to be understood as spoken in his own person, sometimes in the voice of the Head, and sometimes as a figure of the universal Church. But the soul of the just is greatly afflicted when those who know not how to live well hurl strict sentences against the good, and, by their voice, claim for themselves the righteousness which by their conduct they assail. Whence to the friends of blessed Job, who, as we have often said, hold the figure of heretics, it is rightly answered by him: 'How long will you afflict my soul, and wear me down with words?'
For the good are worn down by the words of the wicked, when those who lie either in perverse faith or in depraved conduct swell up in speech against them. There follows:
