Gregory to Peter, subdeacon of Campania. Festus, our brother and fellow bishop, complains that he is despised and held in contempt by his own clergy and townsmen. On which account we command your Experience to approach them with tranquil exhortation, so that, if perchance there be any causes of hatred, once these are settled, you may reconcile them in mutual charity pleasing to God, that both he may bestow what befits sons, and they may render what is fitting toward a father. But if there be any other causes, we command you to lend your support to the aforesaid bishop, saving nevertheless justice and equity. In the month of May, in the second indiction.
