Gregory to Innocent, prefect of Africa. He who desires your Eminence to be the avenger of wicked deeds, shows what he thinks of the good of your equity. Accordingly we bring before you, full of griefs, the complaint of our most reverend brother and fellow-bishop Victor, bishop of Fausiana, that you may both correct the wicked from their conduct through your works, and rescue the oppressed from the injustice which they endure. For our aforesaid brother complains that many violences, and many other things contrary to the manner of the edict, are practised by the African judges in his places; and finally, that double tributes—a thing intolerable in the very hearing—are there exacted.
And since the correction of this evil especially awaits the authority of your dignity, we ask that you both search it out with subtle investigation, and, God commanding it through you, so correct it, that you may succour the afflicted, for the reward of your soul, with the protection of justice, and by the example of this correction may keep others in future from wicked actions. In the month of October, in the fourth indiction.
