Gregory to Azimarchus, scribo. We recall that your Magnificence, at the time when you were here in the city of Rome, came to know that Bonifacius, formerly a treasurer, having made his will, left some portion of his inheritance to the hospice which is situated beside Saint Peter, prince of the apostles. And since we said that we would take pains that a person be sent to our glorious son Leontius for the setting forth of his accounts, we took care that this ought to be carried out.
Therefore, since Laurentius, a most illustrious man, the bearer of the present letter, is known to have been sent for this very purpose, greeting your Magnificence with fatherly affection, we ask that you would assist him here in this cause, and, as we trust concerning you, extend to him your patronage with justice preserved, so that, while he is upheld by the aid of your most sincere goodness, you may acquire a reward before Almighty God, both on behalf of the widowhood of the woman formerly wife of Bonifacius, and on behalf of the poor to whom, as we say, that same Bonifacius left some portion of his inheritance.
