Gregory to Cyprian the deacon. Our brother and fellow-bishop Benenatus asserts that a certain monk named Cicero — who for his own offences was placed under penance by our most beloved son the deacon Peter, then however a subdeacon and rector of our patrimony — is a bondman belonging to the law of his Church, and demands that he together with his property ought to be restored to him. It is therefore necessary that your Love diligently make inquiry.
And if it be established to be truly so, restore the above-named Cicero, together with his goods which are said to have been deposited with Fantinus the defensor, to the dominion of the Church of Misenum without any delay, so that, after he tore himself away from the monastic manner of life by the lapse of his fault, he may acknowledge the yoke of dominion which, had he remained in that manner of life, he might have escaped. Given in the month of May, the thirteenth indiction.
