Gregory to Felix, bishop of Porto. Moved by the grace of your charity, lest we should seem to exist unfruitfully toward you, especially since we know that you have too few servants, therefore John, a servant of ecclesiastical right, a Sabine by birth, from the estate of Flaviana, more or less eighteen years of age, whom you have now for a long time possessed by our will, we give and grant to your Fraternity by direct right; so that you may have him, possess him, and claim and defend him for your own right and ownership, and whatever you shall wish to do with him, you may enjoy free discretion by right of this donation, as indeed a master. Against this charter of our munificence you shall know that neither we nor our successors shall ever come.
This donation, moreover, drawn up by our notary, we have read and subscribed, granting also, without awaiting your declaration, the license of binding him at whatever time you shall wish, with lawful stipulation and pledge interposed. Enacted at Rome.
