Gregory to Anthemius the subdeacon. It has come to us that Pimenius, bishop of the city of Amalfi, is not content to reside in his own Church, but wanders abroad through diverse places; which others seeing, they themselves too do not keep themselves within the fortress, but, following his example, choose rather to dwell abroad. And because, by so doing, they themselves rather invite enemies to their own plundering, therefore by this authority we command you not to cease to threaten the above-said bishop, that he presume not henceforth to do this, but reside in his own Church after the priestly manner.
But if perchance after your warning you shall have learned that he is not corrected, you shall take care to assign him to a monastery, and by all means to inform us, that you may learn again by our injunction what you ought to do.
