Gregory to Fantinus, defensor. The bondservants under Roman law of a man of respectable memory, who appointed that a monastery be established in his house which is situated at Naples, are reported to be dwelling in Sicily. And since that monastery is known, by God's authorship, to have been established according to his will, let your experience hasten with all zeal to give aid to the bearers of these presents, who have been directed thither to gather back those very bondservants; and, when they have been gathered, let it, with your aid, lead them to possessions where they ought to labor. And whatever accrues by their labor, that from which they may be able to subsist being reserved, let the remainder be transmitted to the aforesaid monastery each year, by the care of your experience, the Lord helping.
