Gregory to John, bishop of Syracuse. Although we know that you extend fatherly affection toward the glorious Apollonius, master of soldiers, our common son, yet because he has believed that the same measure of love which you sacerdotally exhibit toward him ought to be augmented by our letters, therefore we commend him to your fraternity by this epistle, exhorting that he may find in you, as is fitting, fatherly consolation, and may be enriched by your comforts, as use shall have required, justice accompanying; so that when he shall have experienced your love toward himself the more, he himself may both recognize what he trusts concerning you, and may perceive that our letter has profited.
