Gregory to Catulus, Romanus, and Vintarith. It has reached us that those who are constituted in holy orders in the territory of Norcia dwell together with strange women. Because this is grave and very unseemly, we have charged Optatus the defensor that he ought to exhort them, so that, if it be so, none of them henceforth may dare to dwell with strange women. But if perchance they neglect his exhortation, we have also enjoined this upon him, that he ought to bring it to the notice of our brother and fellow bishop Chrysanthus, provided that through him he may correct it, or that with his authority the aforesaid defensor may be zealous to amend it.
And therefore let Your Greatness concur in this matter, as befits you, and hold that same brother commended in all things from above, so that, with you assisting, he may wholesomely fulfill what has been enjoined upon him, and may not be able to labor in other matters contrary to reason.
