Cry out with strength and do not spare; lift up your voice like a trumpet, and announce to my people their sins and to the house of Iakob their lawless deeds.
They seek me day after day and desire to know my ways, like a people that has practiced righteousness and has not forsaken the judgment of its God. They now ask me for a righteous judgment and desire to draw near to God,
saying: Why is it that we fasted and you did not see? We humbled our souls and you did not know? For in the days of your fasts you pursue your own wills and you goad all those under your hand.
If you fast for quarrels and fights and strike the lowly with your fists, why do you fast to me as you do today, so that your voice may be heard in shouting?
Not this is the fast I have chosen, nor a day for a person to humble his soul. Not even if you bow your neck like a ring and spread sackcloth and ashes under you, not even so shall you call a fast acceptable.
Not such a fast have I chosen, says the Lord; but rather loose every bond of injustice, undo the knots of coerced agreements, send away the broken ones in release, and tear up every unjust document.
Break your bread for the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house. If you see someone naked, clothe him, and do not overlook those of your own kindred.
Then your light shall break forth early, and your healing shall spring up quickly; and your righteousness shall go before you, and the glory of God shall enfold you.
Then you shall call, and God will listen to you; while you are still speaking he will say: Behold, I am here. If you remove from among you the bond and the pointing of the finger and the word of grumbling,
and give bread to the hungry out of your soul, and satisfy the humbled soul, then your light shall rise in the darkness, and your darkness shall be like noonday.
And your God shall be with you continually, and you shall be filled just as your soul desires, and your bones shall be made fat. And you shall be like a well-watered garden and like a spring whose water has not failed. And your bones shall spring up like grass and be made fat, and they shall inherit generations of generations.
And your everlasting desolate places shall be built up, and your foundations shall be everlasting for generations of generations; and you shall be called a builder of fences, and you shall put an end to the paths that run between.
If you turn your foot away from the sabbaths, so as not to do your own wills on the holy day, and call the sabbaths delightful, holy to your God, and do not lift your foot to work, nor speak a word in anger out of your mouth,
then you shall trust in the Lord, and he shall bring you up upon the good things of the earth and shall feed you the inheritance of Iakob your father; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things.
