The Lord showed me two baskets of figs set before the temple of the Lord, after Nabouchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Iechonias son of Ioakim, king of Iouda, and the rulers and the craftsmen and the prisoners and the rich from Ierousalem, and brought them to Babylon.
And the Lord said to me: What do you see, Jeremias? And I said: Figs—the good ones very good, and the bad ones very bad, which cannot be eaten for their badness.
Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge for good those of Iouda who were carried away, whom I sent out from this place into the land of the Chaldeans.
And I will fix my eyes upon them for good, and I will restore them to this land for good; and I will build them up and will not tear down, and I will plant them and will not uproot.
And I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall turn back to me with their whole heart.
And like the bad figs, which cannot be eaten for their badness—thus says the Lord—so will I hand over Sedekias king of Iouda and his nobles and the remnant of Ierousalem, those left behind in this land and those dwelling in Egypt.
And I will give them over to dispersion among all the kingdoms of the earth, and they shall become a reproach and a byword and a hatred and a curse in every place where I drove them.
