40:1
And the Lord God answered Job and said:
40:2
Will he who contends with the Sufficient One turn judgement aside? Let him who reproves God answer it.
40:3
Then Job answered and said to the Lord:
40:4
Why do I still contend, being admonished and reproving the Lord, hearing such things, when I am nothing? What answer shall I give to these things? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.
40:5
I have spoken once, but a second time I will add nothing.
40:6
And the Lord answered Job again out of the cloud, and said:
40:7
No—but gird up your loins like a man; I will ask you, and you shall answer me.
40:8
Do not set aside my judgement. Do you think I have dealt with you for any other reason than that you might be shown to be righteous?
40:9
Have you an arm against the Lord? Or do you thunder with a voice like his?
40:10
Take on, then, height and power, and clothe yourself with glory and honour.
40:11
Send forth angels in wrath, and humble every insolent man.
40:12

Quench the proud, and make the ungodly rot at once.
40:13
Hide them together in the earth outside, and fill their faces with dishonour.
40:14
Then I will confess that your right hand is able to save.
40:15
But look now at the beasts beside you: they eat grass like oxen.
40:16
Behold now, its strength is in its loins, and its power in the navel of its belly.
40:17

It sets up its tail like a cypress, and its sinews are knit together.
40:18

Its ribs are ribs of bronze, and its spine is cast iron.
40:19
This is the beginning of the Lord’s handiwork, made to be mocked at by his angels.
40:20
And going up on a sheer mountain, it brought joy to the four-footed beasts in Tartarus.
40:21
It lies under trees of every kind, beside papyrus and reed and sedge.
40:22
Great trees with their shoots, and the branches of the chaste tree, cast their shade over it.
40:23
If there is a flood, it will not notice; it is confident that the Jordan will rush into its mouth.
40:24

One will take it in its own eye; twisting about, one will pierce its nose.
40:25
Will you draw out the dragon with a hook, and put a halter about its nose?
40:26
Will you fasten a ring in its nostril, and pierce its lip with a clasp?
40:27
Will it speak to you, entreating you softly with supplication?
40:28
